Degrees and Diplomas

Application for Degree

Each school on the Bloomington campus requires students to apply for the degree which is to be granted.

You must apply to graduate. If you don't fill out and submit an application, you will not graduate, and you will not receive your diploma.

Each school or department has different procedures and deadlines. If you file after the deadline, your name will not appear in the Commencement program book, but you must still apply in order to graduate.

Visit the IU Ceremonies Commencement Graduation Application website for online applications and contact information for schools and departments. Applications are also available in each school, usually in the Recorder's Office.

Diploma Format

The size of all diplomas, other than professional diplomas (J.D. or O.D.), is 8 1/2 X 11 inches. Professional diplomas are 16 x 20 inches.

The degree title will appear in the center of the diploma, below your name. Your major will appear on the diploma only if it is included in the official degree title.

For Example, with in the College of Arts and Sciences, Bachelor of Arts degrees with a major in English will read:

Bachelor of Arts

In the School of Business, the Bachelor of Science in Business degree with a concentration in Finance will read:

Bachelor of Science in Business

Degree honors awarded to you will appear to the right of the degree title, while honors earned in the department, school, or the General Honors Program will appear to the left.

Name Verification and Changes

Your name will appear on the diploma in the same format as your primary name is stored in the Office of the Registrar records (generally, first name, middle name, last name). It is your responsibility to verify that the name listed is correct, or to provide any changes required, including hyphens, spaces, lower/upper case letters, accents, etc.

Changes or corrections can be made in writing, or by completing the "Request for Diploma Name Change" form (you will need Adobe® Acrobat Reader® to print it). A letter requesting a change or correction must include your name, student identification number, and the name as you wish it to appear on the diploma. Your signature must appear on the letter. A "Diploma Name Change" form can also be completed at the Office of the Registrar, Franklin Hall, Room 100.

Address Verification and Changes

[U.S. Addresses]
[International Addresses]

Diplomas are mailed ten to twelve weeks after the graduation date to your Student Home address as listed in the Office of the Registrar's records. It is your responsibility to ensure your Student Home address is current and correct.

Generally, if you are graduating in the months of May, June, August, or December, the Office of the Registrar will contact you prior to your graduation date to collect the address to which you wish to have your diploma mailed. Note: You must be on file as a tentative/final graduate at the time the e-mail is produced. If you do not receive an e-mail from our office, use one of the methods explained below to notify us of your correct Student Home address.

If you are graduating in a month other than one listed above (an option available to graduate students only), you should submit your address to the Office of the Registrar by the end of the month following your graduation date (e.g., if you are graduating or have graduated in July, submit your address by August 31).

U.S. Addresses

Important: Because the diplomas are mailed via U.S. Postal Service Non-Profit Permit 2, please allow two to four weeks for delivery from the time they are mailed.

Updates or corrections to your Student Home address can be made in the following manner:

If you wish to have the diploma mailed to an address other than your Student Home address, you must contact the Office of the Registrar in writing and provide your name, student identification number, and the address to which the diploma is to be mailed.

The Office of the Registrar pays return postage for any diplomas that are unable to be delivered by the U.S. Postal Service. If your diploma is returned to the Office of the Registrar and we receive an updated address from you, we will re-mail the diploma. If you do not receive your diploma within four months of your graduation date, please contact us.

International Addresses

Diplomas mailed to international addresses are sent via U.S. Air Mail. If you wish to have your diploma sent to an international address, you must complete and sign the "Request for Diploma Mailing to Non-U.S. Address" form (you will need Adobe® Acrobat Reader® to print it). A "Request for Diploma Mailing to Non-U.S. Address" form can also be completed at the Office of the Registrar, Franklin Hall, Room 100.

Duplicate Diplomas

The Office of the Registrar will process requests for duplicate diplomas by placing orders with our diploma vendor. Duplicate orders are normally placed with the vendor by the first of each month, with an expected delivery date of six to eight weeks. Please note, however, that original orders for currently graduating students take precedence over orders for duplicate diplomas. When the vendor is printing the diplomas for December, May, June, and August graduates, production of duplicate diplomas may be delayed up to two additional months.

According to our present policy, all duplicate diplomas show the date the degree was originally conferred and bear the signatures of the original University officials. The name to appear on the duplicate diploma will be that which appears on University records. If your reason for ordering the duplicate diploma is that you have had a change of name, please include the name as it should appear on your diploma in your request, along with the appropriate legal documentation. The name you provide will be applied to your duplicate diploma and to your official University record. Graduating students will receive a "Duplicate Diploma Request" form with their diploma. Other requests can be made by mail or FAX (address and FAX number provided below). Please include your name, student identification number, mailing address, phone number, degree, school, degree date, campus, and reason for your request. All requests must include your signature.
