Some classes require students to get departmental consent or permission to register for those
classes. While searching for a class during Registration or
Drop/Add, the Class Search Results page will display "Department
Consent Required" if permission is required for a particular class. Contact the department
which offers the class to determine if you are eligible. In some cases you may need to complete
departmental paperwork to enroll in internships, student teaching, etc. If the
department approves your eligibility, they will add the appropriate
permission type in the registration system to allow you to register for the class.
Students can view class permissions by selecting View Class Permissions in the Student Center available through the Student Self-Service page (accessible via the sidebar) on the Services tab in OneStart.
The Class Permissions page displays Subject, Catalog Nbr, Class Nbr, and Description.
The following information is also provided:
Permission Type:
- Add - Allows you to add the class regardless of enrollment limits.
- If Space - Allows you to add the class only if there are seats available.
Date used: This date will appear when you used the class permission by registering
for the class.
Expiration date: This is the last date you can use this class permission. If you
still want the class and did not register for or add it by the expiration date, you will need
to contact the department to request permission to enroll.
School Code Authorization
In some cases schools restrict classes to students who are officially enrolled in the school
offering the course, such as Business or Nursing. This restriction is typically listed in the Class Notes field on the Class Search Results
page in the registration system. The registration system will check the
student's school before processing a request to add these classes.
If you are not enrolled in the school and wish to enroll in the class, contact the
school or department which offers the course to determine if you
are eligible. Should the department approve your eligibility, it will load an appropriate code
in the registration system that allows you to attempt to register for the course. School code
authorization does not guarantee the student a seat, it simply tells the registration system to
let the student register should a seat be available.
Class Standing Restriction
In some cases departments require students have a certain
class standing (sophomore, junior, etc.) to enroll in a particular
class. This restriction is typically listed in the Class Notes field on the Class Search Results
page in the registration system. The registration system will check the student's class standing
before processing a request to add these sections.
If your class standing does not meet the minimum requirement, call the department offering the
course to determine if you are eligible. Should the department approve your eligibility, it will
load an appropriate code to the registration system which allows you to attempt to register for
the course. Class standing authorization does not guarantee the student a seat, it simply tells
the registration system to let the student register should a seat be available.
Prerequisites Checks
In some cases, students are expected to have completed a course or received an appropriate
score on a placement test before being allowed to register for a course. These prerequisites
are usually listed in the Class Notes field on the Class Search Results page in the registration
system.
If you attempt to register for one of the designated courses and are eligible, you will
see no difference in the registration process.
If you attempt to register for one of the designated courses and are not eligible, you will
see a "requisites not met" error message when you attempt to add the class. Contact your academic
advisor for more information.
