Unofficial Transcripts, Program GPA and IU GPA
The unofficial transcript will display the same information as your official Indiana
University transcript, but it includes the supporting detail about how the Program GPA is
calculated. The Student Program GPA is calculated according to the rules determined by the
student's academic program at the time of printing. This GPA is subject to change whenever
the student changes program.
Degree programs vary widely in their repeat rules, grade forgiveness policies, and other
policies and practices related to degree completion requirements and GPA calculations. For
example, courses that have been retaken under the conditions of the
Extended-X (Retaken Course/GPA Exclusion Policy) are noted with an "X" following the grade.
Under this policy, both enrollments in the course and their grades remain on the record, but
the enrollment of the "X" graded course is excluded from the University credit hour totals and
grade point average (IU GPA). This "X" grade may or may not be excluded from the program credit
hours and grade point average (Student Program GPA) depending upon the policy of the student's
primary program.
University (IU) GPA is the traditional, standard calculation and includes relatively few
special considerations and is consistent across all academic programs within an academic level
(e.g., undergraduate). Term and cumulative IU Summary statistics throughout the transcript
are based on University-wide rules (all X'd grades are honored for exclusion from the GPA,
all other coursework/grades are included in the statistics, even if repeated, etc.).
The Semester IU GPA, as well as a cumulative to date IU GPA, are calculated at the end of
each semester. The overall IU GPA summary statistics are reflected at the end of each student
career level.
At the end of the transcript, you will see a Student Program Summary. These statistics are
calculated according to the rules of your current program (whether X grades are honored for
exclusion from the GPA, whether courses may be repeated for credit, etc.). The cumulative
Program GPA statistics are based on the student's last active program at that career level.
Certain courses may include a note indicating the course was repeated or an equivalent course
was later completed. Courses with this note are excluded from the Student Program GPA calculation.
Be aware that unofficial transcripts produced from
OneStart will not show the student name
or student number and thus will not typically be accepted for official transactions such as
application for admission or as proof of a degree.
NOTE: If you have left the university and can no longer access OneStart, you will
need to order transcripts from the Registrar's Office.
