A waitlist feature is provided in the Registration System. Waitlist allows students who
encounter classes with a status of "Closed" (maximum enrollment reached) to place themselves
on a list of other students who are also waiting to register for the same class. The waitlist system, in its current design, is meant to give those students who are not enrolled in a class a chance to get into the class; it is not designed to assist you in getting a "preferred" schedule.
Waitlist is available while registering for classes or dropping/adding classes using the
Student Self-Service link in the sidebar on the Services tab in OneStart.
Waitlist position is maintained according to the date and time of the waitlist request.
The first person to activate a waitlist request for that class is placed in the top position
on the waitlist. When a seat becomes available, the first eligible person on the waitlist is
registered for the class.
The status of waitlist requests can be monitored by clicking the Class Schedule
link on the Student Self-Service page (accessible via a link in the sidebar) on the Services tab in OneStart.
You are responsible for monitoring your active waitlist requests through the last day of
waitlist processing. After the last day of waitlist processing all unsatisfied waitlist
requests expire. Check the Official Calendar to determine the
last day of waitlist processing.
- Connect to OneStart (
http://onestart.iu.edu)
- On the Services tab, select the Student Self-Service link in the sidebar, then locate the Registration & Classes section, and select
Drop/Add Classes.
- Select the appropriate term.
- Select Add Classes.
- Click
to search for a class.
- Uncheck the Show Open Classes Only box. All classes, open or closed, will appear.
- On the Search Results page, click the Select button for the closed class you
want to waitlist.
- Check OK to Waitlist. If there is another class you would like to drop, enter
the Class Number in Drop if Enrolled.
- Click the Submit button.
- If you click the Success message, you will see your position on the Waitlist.

- If your waitlist request has not been satisfied by the beginning of the semester check
your waitlist request daily through the end of waitlist processing.
- After the last day of waitlist processing all unsatisfied waitlist requests expire.
- Once you waitlist a class you will not be able to modify that request. Waitlist
request(s) can be added or dropped.
- You must drop a waitlist request just as you would any registered class if you no
longer want to take the course.
- If you have a waitlist request that utilizes the drop if enrolled feature and are
still on the waitlist on the first day of classes you must make a decision. Drop your
waitlist request and remain in your registered class or stay on the waitlist. If your
waitlist request has not been satisfied by the end of waitlist processing you remain in
your registered class for the semester.
- During waitlist processing if you have a waitlist with a drop if enrolled class,
attend your registered class. If scheduling permits also attend your waitlisted class.
- If you are registered in a course by waitlist and decide to drop the course, the
same refund schedule listed on the Office of the Bursar's Fee Refund Schedule applies.
- Once waitlist processing is complete if you have not been placed and still want to
add the class, you should follow the Drop/Add procedures.
- Waitlist position is displayed on the class schedule.

Email Notifications
E-mail is now official IU communication. Pay close attention to any courtesy e-mails
you receive from waitlist@indiana.edu or reghelp@indiana.edu.
They will contain important
information that is specific to your registration/waitlist.
Regardless of courtesy e-mail notifications, you are responsible for monitoring your
active waitlist requests through the last day of waitlist processing.
Drop if Enrolled
The "Drop if Enrolled" feature allows students to specify a class they wish to drop if
they are successfully placed in their waitlisted class. "Drop if Enrolled" classes will
show on the student's class schedule with a status of "Enrolled", but will be listed in the
Drop if Enrolled column on the waitlisted class.
Time Conflicts
Students must closely monitor their schedule and be aware of class times so that they do
not waitlist classes that will result in a time conflict. If the student is on a waitlist
that conflicts with an existing class on their schedule, and they have not listed that
conflicting class as a "Drop if Enrolled," they will never be placed in the waitlisted class.
Also, if a student builds two waitlists that conflict with each other, they will never be
placed in either class.
Multiple Waitlist Requests
A student can place multiple waitlist requests for the same course (different meeting times,
days, or instructors), but only if it is a single course with no related component courses.
Related component courses (with lab, discussion, lecture, etc.) are NOT eligible for individual
component waitlists if a student is already enrolled in the course.
